“You get to the point where you realize that you don’t have a place to go home to … that’s a tough place to be..."
Darryl knows what it’s like to be homeless and struggle with addiction. And he knows how important a simple meal can be to getting help. After living on the streets for more than a year, he first came to the Mission in 2005 for a meal and shelter, and he has been getting his life together ever since.
“You get to the point where you realize that you don’t have a place to go home to … that’s a tough place to be, mentally and physically,” Darryl says. “But the truth is, in order to get the help you need, you have to get past that part, see things as they are, and understand where your hope comes from. And that’s what the City Gospel Mission does for people.”
Shortly after coming to the Mission, Darryl was able to get a job as a handyman at a candy store, a job he has held since, and he found a church home. When he got into severe debt trouble in 2013 and simply couldn’t afford to pay all his bills, he knew he could return to the Mission, which he did for a short time in order to pay off that debt. Again, he was grateful for the food.
“That’s part of what City Gospel Mission is all about,” Darryl says. “You get up, you get a focus in the morning, you go throughout your day holding on to that focus, and you come back at night and you get a little reprieve – your meal.”
