Brittany and Jayda: Sowing seeds and bearing fruit

Brittney and Jayda

My name is Brittany. Back in 2015–2016, as a new believer, I volunteered with Whiz Kids.

Saying Yes

A friend from church asked if I’d be willing to tutor a child who needed help with reading. I agreed, not really knowing what to expect.

That’s when I met my Whiz Kid, a new student in the ministry. At the time, I didn’t know her background—only that she was full of energy and excited to be part of the group.

Later, I learned that she was living with her great-grandmother because her mother had passed away and she was separated from her father. Her grandmother did her best to care for her.

I instantly fell in love with Jayda’s bubbly spirit.

Becoming Her Mentor

At some point—though I don’t remember exactly when or why—we stopped attending Whiz Kids. But I didn’t want to lose touch, so I went through City Gospel Mission to formally become her mentor.

This allowed me to spend more time with her—taking her on outings with my family, visiting her home, talking with her grandmother, and even bringing her to church on Sundays.

In 2017, when she was 10 years old, she gave her life to Christ and was baptized.

Losing Contact

Shortly after that, I lost contact with her. Her phone number was disconnected, and despite months of trying to reach her—even knocking on her door—I couldn’t get through.

About a year later, she sent me a friend request on Facebook. She told me she had moved out of state to live with her aunt and uncle and was happy. I assumed she had stepped away from her faith as she started a new chapter in life.

I never saw her again.

That was eight years ago.

Eight Years Later

Then recently, she called me.

She wanted to thank me for being there for her during such a difficult time—for pouring Jesus into her life—and to let me know how grateful she is that God used me as a vessel. She said she doesn’t know where she would be today if we hadn’t met.

She is now a counselor at a Christian camp, sharing the gospel with others daily. She told me that her foundation in faith began with Whiz Kids and our church.

I was completely blown away. I had no idea God had used me in such a way, especially as a new believer. She was the very first person I ever prayed out loud with.

Why This Matters

I just wanted to share this testimony to say: Whiz Kids makes a difference.

She is a living example of that.
