Success comes when preparation and opportunity meet.
This summer much preparation has taken place between Rockdale Academy, Bethel Cincinnati Church, Mt. Calvary Church, and City Gospel Mission to prepare for a great opportunity … to bring our Whiz Kids tutoring and mentoring program back to the Avondale community. When one thinks of Avondale, one may simply think of a community which has a high level of children and families living in poverty or the fact that Rockdale Academy has one of the highest populations of homeless children. However, when Bethel Cincinnati, Mt. Calvary, and City Gospel Mission think of Avondale, we see opportunity. We see a chance to connect a group of passionate volunteers from the local church and community with students in a one-to-one tutoring relationship that unleashes the kids’ untapped potential and brings life transformation to them and their families.
Audrey Holtzman, Resource Coordinator at Rockdale Academy, looks forward to Whiz Kids returning to Avondale, stating that she is excited about students having the opportunity to have a one-to-one relationship with a tutor/mentor.
Whiz Kids participants experience increased confidence, decreased discipline issues in the classroom, improve reading by ¾ a grade level and improve math scores over 50 percent. We undoubtedly celebrate these successes, but we also see success as the beautiful change which occurs in both volunteer and student. We are eager to witness this melding of preparation and opportunity at Rockdale Academy this January! Tutoring will take place Thursdays, 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m., at 335 Rockdale Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229, beginning Jan. 14. If you’re interested in tutoring, you can sign up by clicking here now.
It’s true – one hour a week changes two lives and two families.
