Understanding Poverty Workshop

Introduction to Understanding PovertyPoverty is not just a condition of not having enough money. It is a realm of particular rules, emotions, and knowledge that guide relationships and life choices.

City Gospel Mission now offers two different workshops, both presented by Sherman Bradley, VP of  City Gospel Mission. Both workshops are designed for volunteers and professionals who work with people who come from poverty, or anyone who would like to gain a better understanding about the culture of poverty.

Understanding Poverty Part 1:

An introduction to understanding poverty based on the work of Dr. Ruby Payne.

  • Learn about the hidden rules of class, mental models of poverty, and resources
  • Gain a better understanding of people who come from generational poverty and the key to helping people out of poverty
  • Participate in small group break-outs where you can apply what you’ve learned through real-life scenarios and discussion

Understanding Poverty Part 2:

Part 2 is for those who have attended Part 1 and desire to grow in the process of  building life-changing, transformational relationships with people who live in poverty.

  • How to apply knowledge of poverty’s hidden rules, mental models, and resources to help in developing relationships
  • Learn basic listening skills and trust-building by using warmth, empathy and respect
  • Uncover how your own judgments and expectations affect relationships
